This is an early example of a vibrant Kingfisher Blue high fired vase showing the petrol like effect of this type of glaze. In keeping with the period the vase of shouldered form with a collar neck is quite thinly potted — a factor contributing to the rarity of these vases today. Impressed marks and dated as shown.

The wonder of the internet educated me to the story of this interesting Pottery and I began to look for more Ever since that date I have been looking out for more such bargains but thought it would never happen again Until 3 months ago that is when I found this vase forlorn on a local charity shop shelf , it has a hairline crack alas but it’s really tiny almost invisible , it cost 50p so I cannot complain.

Born in Lincoln. Died in Ashprington, Devon. Edward founded the Ruskin Pottery at Smethwick, Birmingham in and William took over running the firm on his father’s death. The Ruskin Pottery was primarily known for its innovative and experimental use of glazes. The recipes were kept secret so when William died in they were lost. In the early s, the firm began making small round cabochons, which were called ‘enamels’ or ‘plaques’.

These were intended to be inserted into wood, or mounted on metal or jewellery. There are also some examples of their wares in the Victoria and Albert Museum. This record includes information submitted by Martyn Park.

Both innovators and leaders in arts and crafts design in their respective areas. It incorporates a silver mounted large souffle glazed Ruskin honey pot including original lid, model 38 with an enamelled silver lid set with fire opals and a central turquoise. The Ruskin pot is one of the earliest pieces of Ruskin pottery known, dating from before The souffle glaze pre dates Ruskins invention of his better know high fired flambe glaze. In its day this would have been a rare and experimental pot which Liberty embellished.

The silver design is almost certainly by Oliver Baker. The silver lid is fully hallmarked for Birmingham and the silver base for , suggesting the piece crossed the assay year in July
